The very first thing to remember about dinner party planning is this: the simplest dinners are usually the ones where the guests and the host enjoy the evening the most. True enough, there is something to be said with a 10 course meal, gold leaf decorations everywhere and live fiddlers for entertainment. "Ostentatious" comes to mind, but that still does not guarantee that everyone in the party will be happy enough to tuck into the food or stay until the final toast. So, to keep things simple, which incidentally also puts less strain on your budget and your energy, here are some essential elements that you should always bear in mind.
1. Always plan ahead. It does not matter if you are having a dozen guests over or you are making dinner for a party of two. Planning ahead will lighten your load considerably. Decide early on when you want the party to happen and who should be on the guest list.
This is also the best time to think of a theme for the party, if you want to have one. Make sure that you plan about 1 month or more in advance. This is to give your guests time to put your invitation on their calendar, time to prepare themselves to be in line with your theme, and time for you to gather everything you need for that night.2. Consider your guests' needs above everything else. Serving beef roast with Thai peanut sauce may sound great in theory; but not if one of your guest is actually vegetarian, or afraid to try exotic food, or has peanut allergy. Always be thoughtful enough to discreetly inquire about your guests' dietary requirements and start planning your menu with those in mind. This will also help simplify matters considerably.
3. Plan your menu according to your cooking and baking skills. Again, try to simplify matters. No one will expect you to whip up Cotriade or Confit de Canard or mille-feuilles with creme Chantilly unless you advertise it. Be realistic also with your culinary skills. Overstretching yourself on meals you have never even tried before might not bode well for your guests - or you.
Another important element you should know is this: there is nothing against the rule book about buying deli foods or having gourmet meals delivered to your house. Takeout meals are not as bad as they sound either. Or, if you plan things right, you can even designate one of your guests to be the cook for the night or the barbeque tender if you are planning a cookout. Just make sure that you tell him or her in advance. If indeed you are planning to cook the dishes yourself, try to prepare most of it in advance. Pre-cook or pre-bake some of the dishes the night before, so that it can be reheated just before everyone settles down at the dinner table.
4. Create lists, lists and lists. Your dinner party planning will not be complete without having a long list of things to complete. There should be a separate list for the ingredients of your proposed dishes. Another list should be dedicated to your dinner supplies, which may include seating arrangements, serving pieces, plates, cutlery, table napkins and candlesticks. There should also be another one for the cleaning schedule, and one more for the buying and putting up of the decor. If you have certain activities in mind, these should be listed down as well.
